<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Hace

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="es-419"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">En marzo
representando muchos lugares y territorios.

<span lang="es-419"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Una

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I wanted to write some things I had in my thoughts
and heart many moons ago, but I think I had to go through this time for letters
to flow better and for closing some processes. For a while, I have been
thinking about how we can build better relationships that blossom, whose fruits
are palpable in the form of changes in our small corners of the world. There
are a few things I have learned in these intense weeks that give me more
clarity (and hope) of parts of the road to travel. Some of these thoughts come
after going to the <i><a href="https://espoirchiapas.blogspot.com/2017/12/ezln-convoca-al-1o-encuentro.html" target="_blank">Encuentro de Mujeresque Luchan</a></i> (<i>Meeting </i>or<i> Encounter of Women Who
Fight</i>), closing the first module of <a href="https://grupodemujeresixchel.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Mujeres Ixchel</a>’s <i>Certificate on Feminist Theory and Ideas in History</i>, learning some lessons
from the work I do as a consultant and the accompaniment as a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Red-Mundial-de-Doulas-Guatemala-491400661250645/" target="_blank">doula</a>, as well as
learnings from my relationships, including the relationship with myself. Here
are some of those things (so that you read the next piece where I write more of
this).<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In March I attended the <i>Encuentro de Mujeres que
Luchan</i> in Chiapas and I still get goosebumps when I remember entering the community and saw so many women, so diverse and beautiful, representing many places and
territories. It was startling to see around seven thousand women coming
together in response to the Zapatista women’s call. There were conferences,
workshops, arts, sports, food… many opportunities to meet each other and learn,
listening, sharing. The Zapatista women demonstrated they practice their phrase
of wanting a world that fits many worlds, and from a very clearly
anti-capitalist and anti-patriarchal stand. This is part of what I want to keep
living, being a confluent subject (like <a href="http://phaidon.philo.at/~iaf/Labyrinth/Feminias.html" target="_blank">María Luisa Femenías</a> proposes) and that
my practice is the same size as my discourse. To me, learning just to learn is
gluttony, so I am reflecting on what “a world that fits many worlds” (from an
anti-capitalist and anti-patriarchal positioning means for my daily life and
what actions to take in that line. My multiple identities come in here, as an
individual, but also my collective identities. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">One of my friends I went to the women's encounter with told me,
“Majo, the Zapatistas live the utopia! They know how to defend themselves, they
feel safe and they hold each other”. These are the utopias that you live daily,
the <a href="http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/aquino/biography.html" target="_blank">Latin-american feminist theologians</a> would say. And I responde that
the utopia is possible, but by renouncing to some of our privileges as
middle-class women, identifying what to let go of so that we all are more equal or
have more, without continuing to aspire to have more “be” more merely as
individuals. That is where the relationship with others come in, choosing who I
want to build and live that utopia daily, and reflecting on what am I doing on
a daily basis to work so that we all have <i>a
just membership</i> in this world (like <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/254616524_Just_Membership_in_a_Global_Community" target="_blank">Seyla Benhabib</a> proposes).<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When I went back to San Cristóbal de las Casas from
the women’s encounter, while I was waiting to meet with one of my best friends
to have dinner, I started talking to an old lady in the park. Even though we
didn’t know each other, we talked about very deep things in life, and the
importance of enjoyment. I think that I have to balance that every day, enjoy
life, without forgetting to do things to grow, to accompany others in their own
growths and to build spaces that are a bit more just.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Every time I can, I am trying to practice this:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">· Weave: and choosing with whom

the beginning of March, I told some friends in my house that I long to have
more spaces to find and meet each other, to heal and build. So, I’m ready to
open a monthly or recurring circle of women, where we can get together and
talk, listen, learn and see each other. Even though it was amazing to see seven
thousand women together, the most important thing is to identify my women, the
women (and men) of my life who I can continue to build reciprocal relationships
that are transparent, and to continue to accompany each other’s processes. It
is about opening the heart and the spaces to meet and really see each other.</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
Los chocolates decían <i>Hero</i> en cursivas. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
Aunque
tengo mucho por crecer y aprender, tengo salud emocional y mental.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
Sé que vivimos en un país
violento, doloroso, desilusionado y roto. Sé que es difícil entablar diálogo
con el “otro” y la “otra”. Es difícil vernos a los ojos. He conversado con
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
cejas, arrugas, lunares, miradas.
expectativas, necesidades, frustraciones.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
¿Será que nos podemos entender como
seres humanxs?
a diferentes niveles?
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">A few days ago I got on a public bus at Trébol to get back from the
capital city to Antigua. As always, on the way and for a few minutes, there are
people who get on the bus selling something or asking for money. Although the ways
they talk are sometimes similar, there are always details of stories that are
different, and I’m left with impressions of the situations that take place in
these brief minutes of interaction. Many of the people that get on the bus are
men. Many say they were part of a gang, but that now they are trying to win
their daily bread in a dignified manner and working. No matter if they are
selling candy, a flashlight, asking for money or entertaining people on the
bus, almost nobody looks them in the eyes. If someone receives the gadget they
are offering to begin with, if they get money or someone buys something, they don’t
really <i>see</i> them.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">On this occasion, the first one to get on the bus had a very beautiful
smile and voice; a voice to be a radio announcer. He was selling staplers and
on his left hand he was wearing a ring that looked like a wedding band. The
second one was an older man than the first, with several tattoos on both arms,
talking with a lot of strength and honesty. He talked from a spiritual
transformation point, saying “I came from the trash, lived in the dump, I am
trash; but god can use that…”. He said he had interacted with one of those millionaires
from Tikal future” (a mall) that asked him if three quetzales ($0.40) where enough,
and when he said that three was better than nothing the man said he would kill
himself if the only had that in his wallet. He talked about the anguish when
the electricity or school bills arrive, or if you are 10 cents short for the
bus ticket. The third man, with the body build of a basketball player, came in
with a personalized discourse, saying, “Look, I know that you understand me as
a human being. My papers are stained, just like my skin, and if you had a
company you would not give me a job, and that is why I’m selling chocolates”.
The chocolates said <i>Hero</i> in cursive.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">They left me thinking about many things, in the multiple privileges I
have as a middle-class woman, mestiza, urban, with access to education, work… I
can get tattoos because I want to and like them, and in many spaces, they are
not barriers. My skin is not “stained”, and I’ve received “cute tattoo” comments
at immigration and other offices (very visible tattoo on my left arm). I sleep
in a bed every night, and if it’s not my own, it’s because I’m traveling for
work or pleasure. I can choose how to move around based on what’s convenient,
and I don’t even question if I have enough for my ticket (bus, shuttle, taxi,
plane). But above all, I kept thinking about the trash… in the fact that
someone says “I am trash”. I haven’t slept in a dump, have not grown up in one,
and have not considered myself trash ever in my life. Although I have many
things to learn and still grow, I have emotional and mental health.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">I know we live in a violent country, a country that hurts, is disillusioned
and broken. I know it’s hard to dialogue with the “other”. It’s hard to look at
each other in the eyes. I have talked with several people in these days, about
how we relate with each other mainly through violence. A man at a book shop was
telling me how the social fabric has been torn in Guatemala by several events
like colonization and the war, and that in certain attempts to rebuild the
social space we have been re-knitting with violence (we see it in events like
the full rejection of justice pluralism o the violation of the human rights of
the 41 girls that were assassinated on March 8th). I feel full of
frustration, impotence, anguish, anger, and I want to overcome all this to not
relate with others only through violence or pain.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">I invite you to practice an exercise. Be that you walk on the street,
take a bus, a taxi or a plane, do the exercise of looking at people in the
eyes. See the beauty in each person, even if it’s only one thing; let’s
practice this. If you find it hard to look at the rascal smiles on the young
man with his schoolbag on his shoulder, or the braid in the head of the lady
that interweaves ebony and silver perfectly, maybe notice en something external
to the person, like the recently polished shoes the man is wearing, or how the
earrings the young woman is wearing shine with each movement of the bus. Afterwards
you will be able to see one, two, more beauties of the person themself:
dimples, eyebrows, wrinkles, moles, looks. Further on, you can even imagine
that the person looks tired because they are taking care of their mother who is
surviving cancer, o that today they are proud for making their kid a ponytail
without pulling so much on the hair, that they are taking flowers home because
they like to see them on the table. Imagining that they are a person, just like
you, like me, with beauty at different levels, with expectations, needs,
frustrations.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US">Can we understand each other as human beings? Can we see each other in
the eyes more often and see ourselves in the others at different levels? Can we
see that other without making them feel like trash? Without generalizing about
their characteristics based on circumstances? Can we relate with each other
beyond violence and substitute those violence threads with empathy, dialogue
and openness threads? Can we see the “hero” that is inside everyone? <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Yo quiero compartir flores, colores, ritmo.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Quiero ramas para alcanzar,</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Jacarandas</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">are so sensitive to what surrounds them.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In places with freshness, they are patient, </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">knowing when to let go of their flowers to make a carpet with their tenderness.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When there is sun, it seems like they make their step quicker</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">to have thousands of leaves, together offering refuge from the middle day.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Their roots are strong, notorious.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Their branches, as if they flew to kiss the sky.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I want to share flowers, colors, rhythm.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I want to know what other souls I can embrace with.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I want branches to reach,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">roots to get through times.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I want flowers to remember the shortness but beauty of life,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">and that sometimes, like in jacarandas, </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">you can build nests.</span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And I also learned I am thankful I was able to witness this softness, with an almost full moon as a companion and minutes that turned into an hour.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The flower sweetens the bee with her nectar and color,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">but the bee woos her as well</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> It dances, surrounding her, touching her petals,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> not fully holding, but just touching here and there</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">She smells her, I'm sure she smells her,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> that corner, that union between pistil and center</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The bee also sings to her, and she brings memories of buzzing and pollen from other distant flowers</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It's like traveling together.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The flower allows herself this joy and shares herself with this extraordinary creature, that flies!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The flower opens up, just a little, to allow a kiss inside, between neck and shoulder</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And thus, flower and bee explode in a long instant that is theirs, between lines and temporary connection</span><br />
<br />

<div style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It's frustrating to see how our <span class="il">systems</span> work. They're highly efficient in maintaining us disconnected, between bureaucracy, cheap politics, corruption... The hopelessness of monotony is maintained and reinforced. It's the old phrase "things have always been that way and they're going to stay that way". <span class="il">Systems</span> that appear to be inefficient because people people continue to die submerged in poverty, submitted under banks and corporations, anguished by the uncertainty of what the next year will bring, murdered by a diarrhea and if not, later, by a bullet.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But if the objective of certain <span class="il">systems</span> is to keep their power, they are highly efficient in maintaining the current conditions. People that barely survive the day to day, that have no access to dignified health and education, tagged as less than human because of the color of their skin, because of where they are from, because they are poor, and "poor people are poor because they want to be".... On the other side, people that don't have everything but have a lot, thus they have enough, so you can't question anything and it's just easier to believe that the <span class="il">systems</span> are fully democratic, fair, transparent.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We should all be affected by the fact that children still die at birth or hunger, it should be unacceptable to everyone (even if they're not your kids) that a young guy dies from a gunshot or that a young woman dies simply for being a woman. No elderly person should be barefoot on the streets, looking for money or for refuge in the benches of a park. Armed forces should not annihilate those who are trying to transform the world (those that do it by stopping a fight from escalating to more violence, to those that are studying in order to reach the farthest communities). Maybe armed forces shouldn't exist at all, nor prisons or war factories.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Where are we, the citizens, in times when we need to open our mouths against injustice, so that we can help others open their eyes? Have they been able to silence us, harden us, isolate us? Has the <span class="il">system</span> won us over?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"You won't change anything on your own, just go with the flow". It's a lie. We can make differences every day, wherever we are. We can communicate better and be more compassionate, every day. We can find our power and use it, every day.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">No, <span class="il">systems</span> have not absorbed us completely. We can still feel empathy, we can question what is the given, think of alternatives. We can hope.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><i>"Do not accept the habitual as a natural thing. Because in times of disorder, of organized confusion, of dehumanized humanity, nothing must seem natural. Nothing must seem impossible to change". -Bertolt Brecht</i></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><br />Frustrante ver cómo funcionan nuestros <span class="il">sistemas</span>.
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
¿Acaso lograron callarnos, endurecernos, aislarnos? ¿Ya nos ganó el</span><span class="il" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">sistema</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Podemos tener esperanza.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-Bertolt Brecht</i></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He was so excited when my sister told him they would have that for dinner. Pizza: his eyes lit up.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He was patiently ordering with my sister, then waiting for their order's number to come up. We went for a walk (actually we were running around) while we waited. With more patience (and excitement), we went and washed our hands. Then, he had to wait (again waiting), for the pizza to not be so hot that it would burn his mouth.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Finally, with a huge smile, he gave his first piece a bite. It was a personal pizza, with four pieces: two for my sister, two for him. My mom and I had already had dinner.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He said, with wisdom face, "you can't open a pizza into its layers. If you remove the cheese the sauce comes out". He smiled again, knowing he had spoken truth.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And then he signaled me and my mom with his free hand, offering us his second piece. Astonished, I just said "Oh thanks love". But I didn't take it because I wasn't hungry. He stopped eating. He signaled me again, with an inviting hand gesture, and said "eat" very sweetly.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I grabbed it, went for one bite and explained I had had dinner already, but that I was very thankful he was sharing with me. He smiled very excitedly, and took the piece with his hand and devoured it.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My nephew loves pizza.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He is three years and seven months old.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And he knows how to share. How to be patient. How to offer food to others, with loving and inviting gestures. Food he loves.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">If a three year old who loves pizza is willing to share it with his aunt (who has not been constantly in his </span><span class="il" style="background: rgb(255, 255, 204); color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8000001907349px;">life</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> for all three years), we can all share, and we can all be patient. Share even the things we hold dear or like the most. We can at least ask others if they are hungry or cold. And we must learn patience, waiting for those things we want so much.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We can't lose that capacity. Of sharing, of patiently waiting. And if we have, we can learn it from three year olds.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><br /></span>
</span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Mi sobrino ama la pizza.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Mi sobrino ama la pizza.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tiene tres años y siete meses.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Y sabe compartir.
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">I
was waiting for the bus the other day, and I met a man who had just got out of
work and was ready to go home. After greeting him with the usual, “Good
afternoon. How’s your day going?” I then asked him where he was from,
because I heard his accent. “I’m from Guatemala”, he said, and from then
on we just started chatting in Spanish.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Rob
– that’s the alias I will use – was born in the same country I was born, but it
was a very different country at that time. He grew up in a rural
community thirty minutes away driving distance from one of the biggest urban
settings in Guatemala, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetzaltenango" target="_blank"><span style="color: black;">X</span>ela</a>. He only finished elementary school,
so 6th grade in our education system. When he was 17, he <a href="http://www.prensalibre.com/noticias/migrantes/Migracion-incrementa_0_957504265.html" target="_blank" title="Guatemalan immigratns"><span style="color: black;">migrated </span></a>to
the United States, and has been here ever since. He works every day, pays
taxes, rides public transportation, and contributes to the economy of
Washington DC and Maryland. He is undocumented. When I asked him if
he knew about any of the networks for immigrants that are available in the DC
area, his face responded me with a blank expression. I told him about
some of the organizations for <a href="http://www.dcjwj.org/" target="_blank" title="DC Jobs with Justice"><span style="color: black;">day</span></a> <a href="http://www.ndlon.org/en/" target="_blank" title="NDLON"><span style="color: black;">laborers</span></a>, for <a href="http://www.carecendc.org/" target="_blank" title="CARECEN"><span style="color: black;">Central Americans</span></a>, for undocumented immigrants
and other organizations that might be of some utility. He has been here for a
little over ten years, and he didn't know about any of this. I learned
about the DC organizations that work for immigrants’ rights last week at a
meeting for work, and I have been here for a little under two months.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">This
made me really unhappy, frustrated and angry. And it just made me think
and ask questions. How does Rob access health? Does he have access
to preventive health at all? How can he access adult education? How
does he access other kinds of services? What does he do when he gets
sick? Where does he live? What would he do if his boss is being
unfair in terms of working schedules and salary? Don’t get me wrong: Rob
is obviously a resilient, adaptive man, who has worked hard for over a decade.
He has been sending money to his family back in Guatemala, he is bilingual
(maybe even multilingual if he speaks either Mam or Quiche’, the Mayan
languages in the region where he is from) and knows how to move around parts of
the city. He is a survivor. But at the same time, he was telling me
how he hasn't seen his family in all these years, how he can’t leave the
country, how he had to travel through the borders using a <a href="http://www.econ.yale.edu/conference/neudc11/papers/paper_182.pdf" target="_blank" title="Coyotes and immigration"><i><span style="color: black;">coyote</span></i></a>,
and how it is so hard to get a visa and a social security number.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">How
do we allow for some individuals to be treated as people and others to be
treated as less than people? How come our humanity is still defined by
where we are born, our geographic origins? Why do I have more human
rights protected and guaranteed than Rob does? If we really want to
tackle issues around health, human rights, international politics, and
economics, we really need to revise, reform and revolutionize immigration
policies. In the connected world we live in, with technology that makes
distances and time so malleable, I sometimes think we live more disconnected
from each other than ever. We need to learn about the different efforts
currently taking place working towards <a href="http://publications.iom.int/bookstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=36&products_id=968" target="_blank" title="IOM Policy Practice"><span style="color: black;">fairer
immigration policies</span></a>, learn about the different <a href="http://www.fairimmigration.org/" target="_blank" title="Fair Immigration"><span style="color: black;">social movements</span></a> that have been fighting for
this around the world, and think what can we do to be part of the conversation,
the movements, and the reforms. Because after all, aren't we all
immigrants?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">I
leave you with a quote from President Franklin Roosevelt: “Remember, remember
always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants
and revolutionists.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">

frustrada y enojada. Y me hizo pensar y
preguntarme varias cosas. ¿Será que Rob
tiene acceso a salud? ¿Tendrá acceso a
salud preventiva de algún tipo? ¿Cómo
puede tener acceso a educación para adultos?
¿Cómo puede tener acceso a otros servicios? </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">¿Qué

<div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I’ve been in DC a little over a month now. Every time I had come to this city before
moving here, I said to myself, “Ah! I want to live here! I love the energy in this city!”. And I’m here.
It’s crazy and amazing. I really
didn’t know what to expect. New city,
new job, a combination of new friends and some old ones, of letting go… And it has been intense, at so many different
levels. That’s the word that best describes
my experience so far: intense. It feels like
it has been more than a month. I have
been learning and growing in so many areas of my life, and I’m really thankful
for that. It has been
soul-stretching. I have used this phrase
before, for other things, and it may not be the best description but it is what
comes to mind. It has been a month of
soul, mind and heart stretching. People,
places, and new experiences help you grow, stretch, open your horizons.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The thing that has struck me the most so far is how there are
so many cities within a single city; and the many different stories that
accompany this fact. Perhaps I have said
this previously, and I’m sure I experienced and saw it in other cities I’ve
lived in. The diversity, heterogeneity
and dynamism of cities are just amazing.
There are so many DC’s in DC, as there are in Guatemala, Denver, Delhi
and others. So many realities. There are ways to listen to the different
stories, to know a little of the different cities within a city; but it’s not
easy. It requires effort and openness.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">So I want to invite you, wherever you live, to open yourself
to exploring those differences. Go to
places you wouldn’t normally go. Take
whatever precautions or preparation you need, but go and see places within your
city that you have never been to, for whatever reason. Question what you have mentally categorized
about the place where you live. Labels based
on stereotypes, history, the media, or because “it’s too dangerous” or “too
dirty” or “too ugly”. I don’t doubt
there are places that might be this, but they are not only this. If you really are a curious human being, if
you really want to connect with others, if you want to see and better
understand the place where you live, you need to go outside your comfort
zone. And then you may start to question
why those differences exist. Why some
places are so far away from everything, so disconnected, so invisible… Why some
spaces are filled with resources and others aren’t. Things we take for granted like parks, buses,
trees, markets, flowers, bridges, sidewalks, garbage cans. How does this impact you, but specially others,
and their present and futures. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I feel privileged because thanks to my work at <a href="http://hips.org/" target="_blank">HIPS</a>, I have
seen places in DC that I’m sure people that have lived here for years have
never gone to. We work from a <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0306460396000421" target="_blank">harm reduction approach</a>, providing HIV and Hep C testing and counseling, a safe
needle exchange program and a safer sex supplies delivery program, primarily
for people who use drugs and people who engage in sex work. So I get to go in a van to different places
in DC, at day and night, to meet with clients that want the health services we
offer. I feel even more privileged and
thankful to have met so many amazing people so far, with different journeys,
decisions and stories, life lessons and pockets of wisdom. People that make up part of the energy I love
so much in this city.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">So take a walk, take a different bus route, say hello to a
stranger in the train station and ask how their day is going so far. “It’s too far away, I’m too busy, it would be
too much…”. Just do it once, at least
once. You don’t know what you may find,
what you will learn, who you will meet. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Thanks for reading… here's a poem inspired by the energies of this city. For now, looking forward to
what is to come and what this year will bring, with all the stories and cities
in this beautiful place.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">______</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span lang="ES-TRAD">He
Y ahora estoy
aquí. Qué loco y qué increíble. Realmente no sabía qué esperar.
He estado
experiencias te ayudan a crecer, estirarte y a abrir tus horizontes.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span lang="ES-TRAD"></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Lo que
Tantas
realides. Hay formas de escuchar las
diferentes historias, de conocer las diferentes ciudades dentro de una ciudad;
pero no es fácil. Requiere esfuerzo y
apertura.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Así que
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Yo me
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span lang="ES-TRAD"></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Así que
aprender, a quién vas a conocer.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Gracias
hermoso.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: right;">
<i>Para todos los Fellows de GHC... todos son increíbles</i></div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
Desde montañas y valles,<br />
Desde ciudades y pueblos,<br />
Todos nos reunimos,<br />
Como muchos, como uno solo.<br />
<br />
<br />
Estamos sembrando semillas,<br />
Construyendo puentes...<br />
No sólo desde donde venimos,<br />
No sólo donde vamos a estar,<br />
Pero entre nosotros y nosotras también.<br />
<br />
Disfruten este año.<br />
Respiren, vivan, crezcan, florezcan.<br />

Talking about the unanticipated, of surprises, of the unexpected... spring snow. Snow in April. Those things in life that just surprise you; sometimes taking you off your feet, sometimes gradually making you grow, and sometimes simply bringing a smile to your face. This snow has just made me think a lot...<br />
Taking the bus to and from work has been very interesting. Probably the curious anthropologist, but mostly the curious human in me, is just looking at everything and everyone I can, to try to understand, learn, enjoy... One day I talked to a man that was trying to sell Colorado flags and bandannas; being jobless for a while now, he was having a hard time paying the monthly rent. He was talking to one of his friends on the bus about shelter options. Another man in the bus stop was pretty worried that it would start snowing again: no home, no refuge, no warm, dry place. So much need, and feeling a little too impotent or powerless many times.<br />
I've also seen a blind man in the bus several times, with his guide dog: so much love and hope emanate from those two... And it just made me think of how many people are in need of kindness and love. And we have the power to give that, all the time. And then working moms, taking their kids to school or the nursery, musicians carrying their guitar or music paper, kids reading, curious kids staring back at me, people smiling, others frowning... I wonder what's going on in their lives. What happened today? What are their stories?<br />
Life can be so complicated and simple at the same time. So full of everything, all happening at the same time. So full of beauty, and so full of the uncontrollable. And so, with so much intensity and normality going on around me, inside me, this song came to mind. Spring snow. Here are the lyrics. Whatever you're going through, don't lose hope. Things change; things get better... And there's kind people around you, and people in need of your kindness.<br />
<br />
Talked to a man today on the bus, he was afraid of the snow.<br />
"I've been jobless for far too long; being homeless is no fun", he said.<br />
All I could do was wish him good luck, "Hope you sell all your flags".<br />
Don't give up hope, keep holding on, keep holding on...<br />
<br />
All I could do was wish him good luck, "Hope you sell all your flags".<br />
Don't give up hope, keep holding on, keep holding on...<br />
<br />
<div>
Even when it's supposed to be spring and it snows, keep holding on.</div>
<div>
Even when it's spring and it snows.</div>
<br />
Don't lose hope, keep holding on...<br />
Don't lose hope... the spring will come.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
gradual, y a veces simplemente te hacen sonreír.
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-size: 13.5pt;">También he visto
Y luego ver a
Me pregunto
qué está pasando en sus vidas. </span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">¿Qué les pasó hoy? ¿Cuáles serán sus historias?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-size: 13.5pt;">“He estado sin
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-size: 13.5pt;">No perdás la
esperanza, seguí aguantando, seguí aguantando…<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm a visual person, so this is an attempt of "visualizing" the complex and swaying movement between theory and practice (as researchers, professionals, practitioners, etc.). Whether we are more on the theory or practice side, will or can be affected by the kinds of paradigms and theories we choose to use, our biases and training, the methods and the knowledge we have (or think we have). Most importantly, the "balance" will be strongly influenced by the needs of the project we're involved with, the objectives and the actors involved. The context plays a huge role as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But whether we are doing applied research or in-depth ethnography, policy analysis or policy implementation, what is important to keep in mind is an auto reflexive position. We must constantly ask ourselves why we are doing what we are doing, how we are doing it, and what could be some of the unintended consequences of what we are doing, producing, participating in. No one said it's an easy process, but it is important to know your position, and to reflect on how that affects your work.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihNYjUBHEwztjzk_aRbLvcX4wIl5s8KEgkryEXL6XcL3Og7EcEuw7bUBtnigRD9Da0cFpa-X0muXKbr5ekFAXUnawKrK2_jTYOe7oFFQXtzJK42ulfR1W1g_0c4UmoF3cP3Dn1DdiJSFU/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihNYjUBHEwztjzk_aRbLvcX4wIl5s8KEgkryEXL6XcL3Og7EcEuw7bUBtnigRD9Da0cFpa-X0muXKbr5ekFAXUnawKrK2_jTYOe7oFFQXtzJK42ulfR1W1g_0c4UmoF3cP3Dn1DdiJSFU/s640/Slide1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
